Style Spotlight: The Satu Dress

The Satu Dress is our VH take on your classic smock. It was added to the range in 2019 after many requests and has remained ever since.

The Satu's popularity has inspired us to try other smock variations like the Mirte, Vinnie and Lotta dress cuts. The Satu is easily one of the most beloved dresses in our line and this blog post will show you why!

The first reason why the Satu shape is so popular is because it is so comfortable. With a loose waist and a nice full skirt it is an easy, go-to 'chuck on' dress for our customers suitable for most occasions. Additionally the Satu shape can be quite flattering as it has a fitted bust whilst keeping it comfortable in the skirt. Finally it's shape is perfect for transpersonal wear depending on your styling preferences.

Features

The Satu Dress is the classic smock style you already know and probably own with a few VH tweaks. The dress has a t-shirt style bodice with fitted shoulders and sleeves that finish at the elbow.

The tailored bodice balances out the rest of the dress which features a gathered waist and a nice, loose and full skirt.

The Satu has a pullover scoop neck making it easy to take off and on along with practical side pockets ready for everyday wear.

Finally, the dress finishes around knee length making it appropriate for work and easy to to wear no matter the season.

Fit

Like most Variety Hour garments, the Satu Dress is very true to size and easy fit. Take your regular VH size for a comfortable and flatting fit. A lot of smocks at other labels are designed to be quite oversized and wide however that is not the case with the Satu Dress so it is rare people size down past their regular VH size in this style.

If you do like the look of an oversized smock we recommend you go up a size as the Satu is designed to be a fitted but comfortable look across the bust and chest. The most important measurement is the bust so we recommend you read the size chart carefully when purchasing. If you are wider in the arms you may wish to go up a size as this style does have straight, tailored sleeves.

Fabric

We make our Satu dresses in a variety of fabrications that vary depending on what is the best fabric to print each design on.

Most of our Satu dresses are made out of Linen Tencel. Tencel is a biodegradable cellulose fibre that is made out of dissolving and drying out tree pulp. The benefit of mixing Tencel with Linen is you get the texture and feel of linen but with a better drape and less wrinkles.  As a result, our Linen Tencel fabric has a lovely feel and is incredibly comfortable on the body.

Recently we have moved to using Linen Cotton for our Satu dresses. The cotton is great for colour retention and also helps the Linen stop relaxing out too much or creasing. With both fabrics being natural fibres it makes garments super breathable and comfortable to wear.

Our Picnic Satu is 100% Cotton. Cotton is popular as it is easy care and a natural fibre making it the perfect light, absorbent fabric for all year round wear. Additionally Cotton holds colour well and stays lovely and vibrant post wash. Your cotton garments will stay nice and soft throughout their lifespan and are resistant to any stretch or pilling due to the fabrics structure. We use a lightweight cotton so it is wearable in all climates.

Our Basalt Satu is a Linen Viscose Blend. The reason we chose this fabric for this print is too stop slubbing/pilling that tends to occur on 100% Linen and Linen blended fabrics. As the print is quite flat and graphic, pilling can be more noticeable so the  Viscose helps stop it from occurring.
