Style Spotlight: The Swing Top

Our Swing Tops are a versatile cut, thoughtfully designed for transeasonal wear! Having customers all over Australia, from wooly Melbourne all the way to sunny Mackay we have made sure this top is suitable to wear all year round and style in different climates.

The Swing Top is one of our oldest styles and also our most popular shirt cut. The reason why it is so popular is it is incredibly versatile in the way that you can style it. It is easy to wear it to the office, casually on the weekend or dress it up for a night out. The current range of swing tops come in a range of materials and patterns so you can find the perfect one to add to your wardrobe.

Our Swing Top's Features

The swing top has a fitted tank bodice with a slight swing shape through the hip, towards the hem. These two features balance one another, as the the fitted top and the floaty bottom work to create an incredibly flattering silhouette without the whole style needing to be tight or restrained by ties or seams. There are darts at the bust that help bring the bodice in without constraining the chest.

Additionally, the Swing Top has a 4cm step hem, which means it is slightly longer in the back than in the front. The step hem has side seams at the hip which makes the whole garment drape beautifully in the bottom half without adding bulk around the stomach or sides.

The Swing Top has a high scoop neck with a keyhole opening at the back to make it easy to take on and off. The keyhole does up with a button which is covered in matching printed fabric to your top. Our design team works hard to incorporate these small details so your Variety Hour piece is extra special!

How the Swing Top Fits

The Swing Top is quite an easy fit, you should take your normal AU Top Size. The most important measurement is the bust so we recommend you compare it with the size guide on the product page of each Swing Top. When measuring your bust, we recommend you find a similar shaped item in your wardrobe that fits comfortably and measure from armpit to armpit. If you times that measurement by two, that will be your bust measurement. We recommend you add 5-10 centimetres for ease on this measurement so the bust isn't too fitted. For example if your bust measurement is 99cm we recommend size M as the M bust measurement is 105cm.

You will know your Swing Top is fitting correctly if it is sitting straight on the width of your shoulder. If the seam is sitting closer to your neck than your arm then the top is probably too small. If it is sitting slightly lower off your shoulder and onto the arm it is probably too big. You should be able to reach and move your shoulders comfortably with no restrictions or garment pulling.

Our Swing Top Fabrication

We have a variety of Swing Tops in stock at the moment that are all made out of different fabrications. The main material we use for our Swing Top's is Viscose however we currently have some in Silk and Cotton Tencel.

Viscose is biodegradable fibre chemically produced from wood and plants. It is a fantastic fabric for printing and shows colour the best out of all the fibres. It also has a great shine and drapes similar to silk which makes it fantastic for more formal or work appropriate styles like the Swing Top.

Our Sturt Desert Pea Swing Top is made out of a super luxe 100% Silk Crepe De Chine. Silk is the strongest natural textile in the market but remains soft to touch on the skin. Being natural, it is absorbent and breathable, making it a great staple for a transeasonal wardrobe.

Our Wildflower Swing Top is made out of a Cotton Tencel blend which was a first for our range. It is a beautiful fabric blend that is soft to the touch and feels amazing on the skin. Cotton is popular as it is easy care and a natural fibre making it the perfect light, absorbent fabric for all year round wear. Tencel is a biodegradable cellulose fibre that is made out of dissolving and drying out tree pulp. The addition of the Tencel to the cotton makes the cotton softer and allows it to drape.

Styling the Swing Top

When we say our Swing Top is versatile, we really mean it! It is the perfect top for all occasions and can be styled with anything you probably already have in your wardrobe.

If you are wanting to style the Swing Top for work, they pair perfectly with tailored trousers or skirts. You can tuck them in or wear them untucked depending on what style you have on the bottom. They work well with your classic black or navy work bottom however you can style with other colours featured in the print for a more fun or elevated look. We have had customers style their top with suit pants, wide leg pants, pencil skirts and even pleated skirts for an office appropriate look. You could even wear it as a suit shirt with a blazer over the top to add some colour to your corporate workwear. We purposefully make our Swing Tops in fabrics that read more formal so you can wear them to work.

On the weekend, the Swing tops can easily be styled with jeans, shorts and skirts depending on the season. All our prints pair well with blue denim or white and you could also try bottoms in colours featured in the print.

For an event we have customers purchase the Swing Top with matching trousers to create a full printed set. The benefit of this is if you either French or fully tuck the shirt into the trousers you can create the illusion of a jumpsuit. After your event you now have two fun printed pieces you can wear separately for a variety of occasions! Alternatively if you tuck the top into a tailored bottom of your choice it looks equally as good for a formal occasion.

They also look fantastic layered for winter; you can wear a skivvy or long sleeve underneath or use them as a layer underneath a sleeveless dress or jumpsuit.
